Rocks, Sea and Sand: 7 (or 6) Night Oman Adventure

Take the wheel of a 4 litre Nissan Patrol and follow us on our fantastic Rocks, Sea and Sand Guided Self-Drive Adventure to explore a wide range of spectacular terrains in rural Oman.  Marvel at the millennia-old rocks carved by the wind and sand into fantastic and impossible shapes.  Venture over water to the mystical Masairah Island and walk along empty beached with the warm Indian Ocean lapping at your feet.  Camp under an inky black sky studded with millions of stars.  Traverse the enchanting Wahiba Sands where even to this day, camel farmers eke out a living in harsh conditions.

Once these remote places were only accessible to the most daring of adventuters who knew where the desert wells were located and had their trusty camel to carry all their provisions for their journey.  Today, we too can explore these amazing remote places and marvel at the skill and stamina of the ancient bedu; the landscapes will be no less magnificent, but our journey will be in the comfort of an air-conditioned car.

So, look out your driving licence, check your passport is in date and lace up those desert boots; come join Xpedition Arabia for the adventure of a lifetime.

Join us before 12 noon at Muscat Airport where we’ll set you up with your Nissan Patrol Y62 (if you don’t have your own 4×4) and go through the essential controls. Next, once we’re all gathered, we’ll head for a coffee and a pre-trip briefing going over everything you need to know. Our convoy sets off for the old city of Adam where we’ll drive around the oasis showing you what a little water can do to bring life to the desert. Our overnight rest is at a camel farm, where we will camp but with all modern conveniences, where we’ll introduce you to some traditional Omani dishes.

After a 100km road drive it’s time to leave the blacktop far behind. We’re heading for the Al Huqf Escarpment and our route takes us through some spectacular rockscapes where millennia of winds have carved the rocks into fantastic shapes. We’ll find a picturesque place to stop for a picnic lunch before heading further down the wadi. Having covered 80kms offroad, we’ll set up camp as the sun sets, cook our barbeque and wait for the night sky to fill with thousands of stars as we enjoy some tea and coffee in the inky blackness.

We’ll start the next day with a little breakfast before setting off for a 100km offroad drive not only covering gravel plains and tracks but tackling some easy rock crawling along the way. We’ll leave the canvas in the cars and enjoy the comforts offered by the Crowne Plaza at Duqm. Time to wash the sands from your hair, although best to do that in your room rather than at the poolside. After dinner, spend the time as you please, perhaps enjoying a walk along the shore enjoying the sea breeze.

We will encounter many seabirds

Day Four: Duqm to Barr Al Hickmann

Today we’re heading for Barr Al Hickman via the Sugar Dunes after breakfast at the hotel. If the tides allow, we’ll get our group onto the beach and enjoy a drive over the damp sands. The rest of the day will be spent near the Indian Ocean Stopping for lunch; we’ll take a break to dip our toes in the water and cool off as the sun sinks low in the sky.  Overnight we will wild camp in the area known as the “Maldives of Oman”, have our camp supper and relax round the campfire.

Then we’re off again to drive round the island finding a shoreside spot for a picnic lunch. We’ll return to the ferry port but this time, catch the National Ferries catamaran for our return to the mainland. Our evening destination is the Wahiba Sands where we’ll have a short offroad drive to reach our camp spot and enjoy our evening meal in the quiet of the desert.

At Bidayah we’ll say farewell to our guests who’ve opted for the 6 night package, while the rest of us will head for the Mysk Al Mouj Hotel in Muscat. We’ll officially end our trip with a visit to the lovely Rozna Restaurant; Omani food served in a beautiful building reminiscent of an old fort.
