What to wear: what to pack

Desert and wadi sections

We are heading deep into the desert so wear comfortable clothes.  We suggest lightweight knee length shorts or trousers and loose fitting t-shirts or a shirt.   A wide brimmed hat can help with keeping you cool.  We suggest closed in shoes as the desert sand can get quite hot but in many cases walking sandals will do fine.

Small towns and villages

Where we visit “local” restaurants, or villages or out of the way areas we suggest wearing modest clothes while in public.  Knee length shorts and loose-fitting short sleeved tops are fine; short shorts and vest style t-shirts are not recommended as wearing these may offend our hosts.

Sultan Qaboos Mosque (should you visit it)

Ladies should wear a loose long-sleeved blouse and long skirt/full length trousers; they should also cover their hair.  Men should wear full length trousers and a loose shirt.  You will require to remove your footwear whilst inside so it’s a good idea to wear easily removable shoes.

Please wear trainers or boots in the dark and around the campfire – it may be the “empty” quarter but there are some creatures there which will bite or sting you if you stand on them by accident!  If anyone should be unlucky enough to be stung by a scorpion, and this has never happened on one of our trips before, then we will drive them out to the nearest hospital – it may take hours to reach there so let’s make sure it doesn’t happen!

During the winter the nights can get distinctively chilly, so you may like to take a fleece or a blanket to wrap round you at the campfire!

We recommend that you take a soft sided bag for nights we are camping – hard sided cases are a bit bulky for inside the tent.

Clothes suggestions

We love the Columbia Brand of UV 50 sun protection shirts; these can be found from about £40 upwards.  Not only do they protect your skin from the sun, they are also very quick to dry after washing on tour!
